HISTORY OF PROVAIL
Founded in 1942 by families seeking solutions for the unmet needs of their children, the agency was formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy of King-Snohomish Counties. The organization disaffiliated from UCPA in 1999 in order to focus its resources on program development in Washington State. The first such step was the acquisition of C. Gerald Warren & Associates, one of the most prominent assistive technology providers in Washington State. Also in 1999, UCP of Washington voluntarily dissolved as a nonprofit corporation and gifted its assets to PROVAIL to support the development of a new integrated services facility on Stone Way, in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood.
The name PROVAIL was selected with the pro bono assistance of Heckler Associates. It is intended to be a unique identifier that signals to the community our expansion of services to include people with disabilities other than cerebral palsy as well as our shift from institutional to community-based services.
